How Veneer Is Produced: From Log To Thin Sheet

Step 1: Selection and preparation of the logs


The first step to the process is log selection according to diameter, species and moisture content. Both the bark is removed and the logs are cut into appropriate length to enable smooth feeding into the peeling machine.


Step 2 (optional): Make one soft in the logs


Some manufacturers use hot water soaking or steam treatment to soften up the logs. This enhances flexibility, minimizes the likelihood of cracking, and facilitates smoother veneer sheets during peeling.


Step 3: Veneer Peeling Process


The prepared log is clamped in to a veneer slicing machine and rotated at steady state velocity. Then a razor sharp knife blade slices along the length of the log creating thin continuous sheets, regulated thickness and surface.


Step 4: Cut and grade the veneer.


Peeling is then followed by cutting the continuous veneer sheet to the standard sizes. Grain defect, color, and quality level is done by either placement of workers or with the aid of an automatic method for various plywood applications.


Step 5: Veneer Drying Process


Veneer dryer machine is used for drying veneer as well to remove the moisture of fresh veneer. The right drying process needs to dry the raw material effectively in a way that will help stabilize it, glue bonding performance and helps to prevent warping at later stages in production.


Step 6: Storage and Preparing to Apply the Glue


This involves stacking the dried veneers and storing them in a controlled environment. The dry veneers can then be prepared for glue spread and pressing, becoming the final board panel structure in the next step of plywood manufacture.
